Unlike their wild counterparts roaming the arid deserts of Australia, domestic bearded dragons can actually be rather deficient in crucial vitamins and minerals due to a typically unvaried diet.
Also, many bearded dragons aren’t exactly the biggest fans of some of the more vitamin rich foods in their diet, like leafy greens. So, what’s an easy way to incorporate some much-needed vitamins and minerals into their diet? Just give them some of the best supplements for bearded dragons of course!
The best supplements are going to of course include calcium powder, either with or without D3 depending on your lighting setup (MVB vs. regular UVB). Also, you’re definitely going to want to incorporate a great multi vitamin into your dragon’s diet to help them obtain other essential minerals and vitamins.
The best calcium powder for bearded dragons is hands down the calcium powders from Rep-Cal. Not only are these powders super finely milled, allowing them to stick to feeders effortlessly, but they also are phosphorous free!
You want to avoid calcium powders with phosphorous in them because your dragon needs a strict 5:1 calcium to phosphorous ratio. Since dragons already get all the phosphorous they need from their diet, it is crucial you don’t overload them in their calcium powder, and instead just focus on giving them calcium.
Now, in regard to whether you get the powder with or without D3, consider your bearded dragon’s lighting setup. Do you use a strong MVB (mercury vapor bulb) that helps your beardie get an adequate amount of D3 already? Or are you using a more conventional UVB light?
Although not particularly common, bearded dragons can in fact overdose on calcium. Too much calcium can damage your dragon’s organs and calcify their bones. Not good. To avoid your bearded dragon overdosing on calcium, please refer to the next section for a better idea of how often they should be receiving calcium in the first place.
In terms of how often you should be giving your dragon supplements, it really just depends what you’re giving them to be honest! Please consider each of the supplements below and their suggested frequency for feeding.
Because vitamin A can actually be quite toxic for bearded dragons in high doses, you’re going to want to try and avoid any supplement with this in it. Instead, try and opt for supplements that state they have beta-carotene in them, as this enables the bearded dragon's body to convert just what they need into Vitamin A, ensuring they never consume too much.
For adult bearded dragons, the typical rule of thumb is calcium powder 2-3 days a week, with no more than one meal dusted per day. And when it comes to the dusting? You don’t need to coat feeders in calcium like they’re sugared donuts! Just a light, even dusting is sufficient.
Now, for baby dragons or dragons under a year old, you’re going to want to dust their food 4-5 days a week to help them grow up nice and strong.
Bearded dragons of all ages should be given a good multi-vitamin to ensure overall optimal health. For babies, give their food a dusting of a multi-vitamin 2-3 times a week until they reach 10 inches, then transition them to once a week. Adults should be once a week, never more than twice.
